THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Sacred

As this article indicates, the hippies have found an eighty-year old report written by an anthropologist from the University of Washington that sort of suggest that the area around the stadium might have been a Indian burial site. In reality, what the anthropologist in question found was a partial skeleton and a Mexican gold coin dating from the 19th century - but please don't pay attention to the facts.

After all, the facts don't really matter - the hippies have another interest group to drag up into the trees and yell into bullhorns. What they lack in gainful employment is more than matched, I'm sure, by their energy and enthusiasm for civil disobedience. Never mind that no one EVEN KNEW ABOUT THIS SO-CALLED REPORT until the lawyer for the hippies dug it up and shopped it around. It's still very sacred, I'm sure. Break out the smudge sticks and the burning sage, and let's party!

Sorry if you think I'm being flippant, but this is the worst sort of opportunism. This 1925 report has yet to be corroborated by any other source. Ken Lightfoot - who as the head of the UC Museum of Anthropology, knows a thing or two about the subject - is unimpressed and says the skeleton's ethnicity is undetermined. And besides, why have we heard nothing about this issue until a lawyer bankrolled by Panoramic Ave NIMBYs waved some old records in the faces of Indian activists? The original report was written eighty years ago, and no one seems to have cared about it until now...until a university project gives the activists a platform to get in the newspaper.

But here in Looking Glass Land, the facts don't matter. Volker and his ilk are playing liberal interest group roulette, and they just happened to land on the Indians this time. Next time it'll be the LGBT community, or perhaps the Aztlan crowd - after all, the Stadium really is Mexico's property, isn't it?

Besides, the activists should know that Cal would never build on an Indian burial ground. We've seen enough movies to know better...

haha. pro-stadium folks outsmarted again... seems to me you all should spend more time strategizing instead of coming up with clever monickers to insult the 'hippies'...

Actually, we'd prefer to debate you on the merits of the project - assuming you're a legitimate activist and not a 15-year old USC fan. If you care to take the bait, please send an email to the link in my profile. Holding my breath....

This must be a very important site to the Indians. So important, in fact, that they didn't even know about its existence until the lawyers informed them.

The Chronicle is a sad mess of a newspaper. Have they checked their own archives for any stories to give to the opposition? It's sad when they
have to mention their rival paper by name.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that an institution with some of the greatest anthropology and archeology departments IN THE WORLD wouldn't know of the existence of a burial ground on its own campus.

These people are nothing but liars who will piggyback on any cause to push their small-minded view.

How long before this guy joins the protest? The great thing about free speech is that ignorance does truly lose in the end. Patience, Bear fans (and rationality fans), patience.

This has become a very tragic struggle of truth vs lies. Sadly as the Panoramic Hill Association has funded an army of PR people, the truth no longer matters. The war of truth and justice is now in doubt. The association is willing to sink to whatever low they must go, as was witnessed with this new questionable report on a native burial ground. In actuality, if you look at the report there is nothing to suggest that there is a Native burial ground on site. This body that was found was most likely that of a Spanish Conquistador, responsible for genocide against the Natives! Yet the piece of trash Chronicle trumps this to be truth. I am sorry folks but unless more of us stand up and demand the truth, we will be forever subjugated by the rich land interests of Berkeley. Is that really what you want?

I think we ought not overreact to this latest stunt. I feel a bit bad for putting the article up, but I was pretty angry after reading the Comical piece. I don't believe this issue changes a thing with respect to the project. It does generate lots of noise, but ultimately how important is that? In the unlikely event that there is indeed a burial ground on site, the University has procedures that they're prepared to execute in accordance with federal law.

BTW, the first order of business if remains are found? Chop down those trees so a proper excavation can be done.

Never "feel a bit bad" for telling the truth Tightwad. For when that day comes, the special land interests and City of Berkeley will have succeeded in breaking your spirit. Long live liberty and justice! (-:

Not feeling bad about calling a spade a spade, Seth. We just don't want to be overly reactive and hysterical to every loser with a bullhorn and lots of free time. Got to stay focused on what's important, and right now that appears to be the seismic testing.

BTW, if GameDay comes to Berkeley for the UT/Cal game on 9/1, it might be a very good opportunity to publicize any City of Berkeley boycott efforts. I leave that in your quite capable hands.

You know I agree Tightwad. With the level of rhetoric out of the grove at an all time high, it seems like everyday a new false allegation against the University surfaces. If it is a war of attrition they are attempting to wage, I would say they have been successful. I mean it has simply become too difficult to keep up with every new lie they spin. I mean go to work, come home, and wow! THERE are three new lies waiting to be debunked! How can one possibly hope to keep up when the media is working in collusion with the special land interests?

I find it laudable that the University is unwilling to stoop to the tactics of the consortium of lies. I guess that takes the meaning of being the bigger and better person to a new level. I hate to see anyone lie, but the special land interests do it with such temerity that one can become nauseous! I have to trust that Pete is correct when he says the truth will eventually win out. Still, if you have deep pockets that cannot be exhausted, and an extremely small group of vocal radicals, even the truth can be extinguished. I pray this does not happen!

On the boycott issue: I plan to slowly form an exploratory committee to examine how realistic an option it is. (-: Given the political climate of Berkeley it could be a very difficult sell, regardless of the large fan base. There must be some local support as well, which I believe there may be.

So I will do my best to not become engrossed in the next lie out of the grove. Funny thing, each new lie seems to become more egregious than the last. What next? Nuclear waste in the Oak Grove? Dinosaur fossils? Who knows, nothing surprises me anymore…

At 9:48 AM, Blogger Cal Football Radical said...

Sorry, took the shoes off the bed. I have received many a disparaging comment because of the shoes in the picture. Ok, I will admit, shoes have no business on a bed. I am sorry for being so stupid as to put my shoes on the bed. SORRY, SORRY, SORRY!

Oh and by the way, the shoes, there is a complete explanation to their being there. I have neither the time nor patience to go into such matters though…

have you thought about donating your shoes to the college football hall of fame?

These are interesting developments, which take time to interpret. I wear shoes and am Native. Chief Yellow Bear is a fake baby! Come back to me, please!

As far as kicking my ass goes, well you know my policy. Name a time and place...

P.S. Love Hawking, please let me go!

u r selfish. u only care about me because i got the hawking tickets. if i did not have hawking tickets would u still let be b ut bitch? chief yellow bear is a fake. but he has sum great weed. and he gets free fat slice pizza.

At 11:42 AM, Blogger Cal Football Radical said...

I can assure you my motives are NOT selfish. Sure, your friend has a great weed supply, but there is much more to life than getting stoned all the time. If you are chemically dependent on narcotics I understand, but your new friend is not the answer. One of my friends said he saw him hitting you quite violently near the Oak grove yesterday. I guess you smoked too much of his weed or something. Is that the kind of man you want? One who beats the crap out of you for no reason? Please, do not make a mistake you will regret forever.

At 6:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

u saw him hitting me at the oak tree and did not stop it. waht kind of a man are you?

At 9:44 PM, Blogger Cal Football Radical said...

No dear, my friend saw him bludgeon you. He attempted to intervene but apparently due to the concussion you suffered, you forgot what happened. Your new friend and his numerous buddies beat my friend within an inch of his life. They said they wanted to make an example out of him, and I suppose they did.

I reject violence and all of its brutality. Your friends at the Oak grove do not. Please, get some help. You have a lot of potential and much to offer this world. Staying with people like Yellow Bear will only hold you down until your life has tragically passed you by. I tell you this because I care about you, and want only the best for you. Please, stop seeing him before he kills you, like he almost killed my friend…

true thats why i got the stehen w. hawkings tickets. a lot of my friends want to go, because stephan is getting a divorced so amy hot nerd friends want to meet him. i am glad you care about my life and potential. i am thinking about taking kitty bear instead.

At 11:28 PM, Blogger Cal Football Radical said...

Well that would certainly be consistent with your irrational and emotional thinking. Great, take Kitty Bear! Don’t expect me to save your ass the next time you are beaten!
